5 Strategies to Implement TODAY to Keep Clutter AWAY.

Do you find yourself having trouble keeping spaces clear of clutter? The key is consistency.

Here are 5 habits to adopt to help you stay consistent:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Define achievable de-cluttering goals. Break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Setting realistic goals will make it easier to stay focused, motivated, and actually accomplish the goals you have set. You also want to make your goals measurable. Instead of a vague goal like "de-clutter the living room," specify the number of items you aim to donate or the number of bags you want to fill with discarded items. This adds clarity to your objectives.

  2. Create a Schedule: Allocate specific times in your calendar for de-cluttering sessions. Your goals can be adjusted based on your current daily and weekly commitments. Whether it's a few minutes each day or a dedicated block of time each week, having a schedule helps to keep you focused as well as ensure that de-cluttering becomes a regular part of your routine.

  3. Focus on One Area at a Time: Instead of trying to de-clutter your entire home in one go, concentrate on one area, room, or category. Create a small de-cluttering goal that is specific such as purge 10 books or purge half of my hair care products. This will help prevent overwhelm and will allow you to make meaningful progress in smaller, more manageable increments. Each small win adds up!

  4. Use the "Two-Minute Rule": If you find a de-cluttering task that will take less than two minutes, do it immediately. For example, you hang your jacket up and notice there are a two or three jackets also in the closet that no longer fit (why are they taking up space in the closet?) Tackle the task of removing these jackets from your space now. Completing small tasks promptly prevents them from accumulating and turning into larger, more time-consuming projects that you'll have to schedule.

  5. Practice the "One In, One Out" Rule: Maintain a balance by adopting the "one in, one out" rule. For every new item you bring into your home, consider letting go of an old one. This habit helps maintain a balance, prevents the accumulation of unnecessary belongings, and encourages you to evaluate the importance of new items before adding them to your space. In addition, it is important to be intentional about your purchases. Before buying something, ask yourself if you really need it and if it aligns with your lifestyle. Avoid impulsive buying, especially for items that may end up unused or contribute to clutter. Mindful shopping reduces the influx of unnecessary items which will prevent future clutter.

BONUS!

Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your de-cluttering achievements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement helps build momentum and motivation for ongoing de-cluttering efforts. Remember, little by little, space by space, your "small wins" will turn into a "big win", so KEEP GOING!

Remember that de-cluttering is an ongoing process, and creating new habits, routines, and staying consistent is essential for long-term success!
