How To Motivate Your Kids To Help De-clutter and Organize Your Home!
We all want to teach our kids how to become responsible and capable humans, and we do that best by modeling the behaviors that we want to teach them. This means including them in the projects you want to accomplish around the house! Here are five ways to help motivate your kids to get involved in de-cluttering, organizing, and tidying your home:
1. Make it a game. This could look like creating a scavenger hunt to find 10 items that you no longer want to keep, setting a timer to tidy what you can in under 10 minutes, or once you've reached the organizing stage, you can turn sorting like items into a matching game. No matter the game you choose, everyone wins!
2. Keep things age appropriate. A two year old is not going to understand or perform the same way that an 8 year old will, so assign jobs that each individual will be able to complete (with confidence!). They will not only feel good because they helped Mom, but they will know exactly what to do next time. Practicing the skills of tidying and de-cluttering will eventually become second nature to everyone in the family and will get much easier with time, I promise!
3. Incorporate de-cluttering and tidying into your (daily, weekly, monthly - whatever works for you) routines will show your kids that it is important. Taking care of yourself, your belongings, and your home are very important for your mental and physical health which means everyone benefits. Not only will you feel better, but your kids will feel better too.
4. Make it fun. I can usually get my kids to do just about anything if I tell them I'm going to put music on, especially their favorite songs. Does "Baby Shark" drive you crazy? It might, but remember this is about them learning and having fun, so get into the groove with them and get the work done!
5. Lastly, and in my opinion the most important, is to use positive reinforcement. Your kids want to make you happy, they do. So praise them for trying something new, for putting in the effort even when things got hard, and for a job well done. Reward them with whatever it is that will continue to motivate them to try again with you next time. If they see that de-cluttering, tidying, and organizing is a fun activity that they get to do with Mom and they can earn something in return, then that's another win for everyone.
Just remember, team work makes the dream work. As corny as that sounds, it always rings true. So be brave, have fun, and show your children what living a clutter-free, organized, and productive lifestyle is all about!
