Want to Know My Top Organizing Secret?
Do you have trouble ridding your home of things? Yes I said it, things. It can be hard to think about your stuff being anywhere but exactly where it is. The secret is to think positive. Imagine what you would love your home to truly be, and work towards that. There are five simple questions to be addressed when playing the organizing game, will you be able to answer honestly?
You know that super cute sweater that you look at every winter and then decide against wearing? Yeah, I know, I have that sweater too because I never wear it. As well as 3 other ones, two pairs of jeans that I can't fit into, and at least 10 scarves that are nowhere near fashionable. I can't remember the last time I wore any of it. So if you and I have this in common, then I think you just started your first donate pile. Put any items whether it be clothing, home decor, or toys here. You're doing great so far, so let's keep going!
Next, let's think about how often you're using the items that you're organizing. If the answer is everyday, chances are it is going to make it to the next round of the game. If the answer is that you haven't used the item in more than 1 year, chances are you're not going to use it anytime soon. You can choose to donate or throw out but either way, that is one less thing taking up precious space.
Next, a less common question to ask yourself is, how difficult or expensive would it be to buy another (insert item)? What I like to do is, hold the piece in one hand and cash in the other. Which would you rather have? If it's the item, then keep it! Not everything needs to be tossed out feeling unwanted. Just be honest with yourself and stick with your gut.
One of my favorite reasons to de-clutter is the amount of freedom it brings. Spacial freedom that is! The more stuff you have the less space you have. My family and I live in a small home and "extra" space is rare around here. Only the most important items are front and center while others are stored neatly away. Giving your home space to breathe will help you breathe easier as well.
The secret of having a successful organizing session is to think positive. If getting your home organized is a goal that you have, then don't stop until it's reached. Remind yourself daily that you can do it while remember to give yourself Grace along the way. The road may be rough but the end will make it worth it.
